October 6, 2005

Greetings.  Lots of things happened over the last week, and it looks like it won't be slowing down for a while..  I'll talk briefly about each event..
I was very shocked and saddened to learn that a friend of mine, Tim Gunther, was killed in an auto accident outside of Lake City, Florida on Sunday morning..  He had just finished a gig on Saturday night with the Breeze Kings, and was asleep in the van when the accident happened..  Tim was a great drummer, and I am thankful to have had the opportunity to play music with him, over the years..  He will be missed by all of his friends, musical partners, and the entire blues community in Atlanta..  Friends of his are invited to get together at Northside Tavern in Atlanta on Thursday night, October 6th, to celebrate his life..
Last week was very busy for the gigging situation..  I performed solo at Monterrey's on Thursday night, then played at the Biltmore Hotel with the League Of Decency on Friday night, and also with the League on Saturday night at Lambert Place..  Sunday afternoon was the Katrina benefit at the 5 Spot in Little Five Points..  Some great bands performed that afternoon, featuring the League Of Decency, Heaven Davis, and King Johnson.  It was alot of fun, and all of the bands sounded wonderful..  Later that night, it was off to Memorial Drive to play at Leisures with George Hughley and the Colored Boyz..
Thursday night is still party night at Monterrey's Mexican Restaurant on Buford Highway in Doraville..  It is the home of my regular solo acoustic gig, and great food and margarita specials await you..  I really mix up the music on this gig, and I am constantly amazed at some of the requests I get..  I try my best to please..  Lately, the song list has included Neil Diamond, Poison, Johnny Cash, Keith Whitley, Green Day, Willie Nelson, Jimmy Buffet, Bad Company, Led Zeppelin, Bread, and America..  It changes every week, so come out and enjoy pitchers of frozen margaritas for $9 and jumbos for $4..  Music starts around 7:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Sunday night is time for the blues, soul, and R&B music that you grew up with..  You can hear this at Leisures night club, which is located in the Marshall's shopping center at the corner of North Hairston and Memorial Drive near Stone Mountain..  It is the home for George Hughley and the Colored Boyz.  George is a great singer, a wonderful entertainer, and knows how to please a crowd..  I've always had a heart for R&B, and I am in heaven getting to perform these tunes that I have loved for so long..  The Spinners, Chi-lites, Ojays, Ohio Players, Sly and the Family Stone, Temptations, and the Commodores are just a few of the bands we are covering.  The band also features Joe Tucker on Bass, and Bill Stewart on Drums.. Bill will be leaving us soon, and George Calhoon will be taking over on drums.  Things are shaping up in Bill's other project with Lee Roy Parnell, and he will be traveling with the Capricorn Rhythm Section..
Leisures is a really cool club, and you should check it out sometime..
Music starts at 9:00 p.m., and we play till midnight..
I will be performing with the Ron Kimble band at Glenda's Bar and Grill on Highway 138 in Walnut Grove on Friday and Saturday night, October 7th and 8th..  Many of you remember Ron from Hemingways back in the 70s and 80s.. He also was in the house band at the Country Rock (now Uncle Woody's), in the 90s.. I played in his band at that time, and have played several gigs with him through the years..  Ron loves to mix it up as much as I do, and there isn't anything he won't play or sing, so it should be alot of fun..  Music starts at 9:00 p.m. on both nights.
The League of Decency will be performing at Jake's Toadhouse on Friday night, October 14th.  This gig is open to the public, and will be a great chance for you to come hear a cool swing, jazz, dance band..  The band is hoppin', and has been adding new tunes left and right..  3 great horn players, keys, bass, guitar, drums, and a lead vocalist..  We play everything from Louis Jordan and Glenn Miller, to Chicago and the Doors..  Make plans now to be there!!
I have some solo gigs coming up in Doraville on October 9th, and the 29th, both in the afternoon..  In the evening on October 29th, MOTION will be performing at a Halloween Party in Dacula..  I am very excited about rockin' out with Motion again..  Foreigner, Journey, Loverboy, Led Zeppelin, Thin Lizzy, Def Leppard, Billy Idol, The Cult, and Head East always gets the blood pumping..  HELLO DACULA!!!
Get ready to rock!!  I'll have more information about the party at a later date..
I hope to see you at some gigs in the future..  Thursdays at Monterrey's, and Sundays at Leisures are regular, every week gigs..
Plan to come out and enjoy some live music, soon...  Stay tuned..
